Team Member Skill Inventory

Gagan Singh has prominent skills in being a team leader. He enjoys scheduling meetings, keeping an eye on us, going over the work, and etc. Because of that passion, he has volunteered for this position and we have all agreed. Due to his summer job as a market researcher, Gagan has excellent researching skills which are a great asset for our team. Furthermore, his skills in producing PowerPoint slides are superb which will help us create captivating slides. Also, due to his Marketing background, figuring our target markets, how to communicate with these markets and etc are all issues Gagan will assist with. He will also make sure that everyone’s voice is heard during team meetings.

Sachin Jhangu has many of the same skills as Gagan which has come from the business he currently owns and operates in India. He has volunteered to be the team whip which will motivate us to get our work done and oversee that we actually get the work done. Sachin communication skills are top notch which will come in handy if we have to conduct primary research in public or have to contact any outside organizations. Sachin has been assigned as the devil’s advocate to prevent Groupthink.

Eric Zhou has an extensive connection to the soccer community and he will be our ticket in. Eric is our liaison between the SFU and the sports community. As a soccer player, he will help with the design of The Sbag due to his different perspective.

Kay Sze mathematical skills have helped us calculate our company’s present and future value. Profit margins, break even analysis, etc are all calculations she can compute without any help from other group members. Due to her great organizational skills and beautiful writing, she will track and record what we discuss during our team meetings. Afterwards, she will email all of us the meeting minutes.

Leo Chan and Kevin Wong are masters of computers and programming. Any technical skills needed may be done by Leo and Kevin. They will collaborate with Gagan on any PowerPoint slides. They can also assist if any websites, computer programs, etc are needed.

Learning Team Goals

  • Every team member will try their hardest to accomplish their assigned work. If they are stuck or confused, they can always ask other members for assistance.
  • Every Team Member will attend our Team meetings unless we are provided with a sufficient excuses or even a note. Any team member who will not attend will contact Gagan via phone, email, or person.
  • With our collective skills, we will attain at least an A- in our classes (BUS or ENSC).
  • We will try our best and learn from our mistakes so we can absorb the most we can from this class.

What are potential barriers to the achievement of these goals?

Communication barriers – because business and engineering students have different perspectives, each member will come to our team meetings with an open mind and not immediately dismiss somebody else’s idea. Respect will be shared equally amongst our group. We will also do all our work on Google Docs so we can view and edit each other’s work without constantly hassling the other team member.

Scheduling – We all have a busy schedule. A majority of us team members are taking a full load – 5 courses. We will keep a 2 hour slot on Saturday morning available just in case a team meeting needs to be scheduled.

Geographic barriers – All of us live in different areas. Burnaby campus is not the most convenient place for all of us to meet. Surrey Campus would be easier considering two of our members are located in Delta and Surrey.

Ground Rules

  •   We will meet on Saturday at SFU Surrey Campus at 11:30 for two hours once a week (if necessary). If a team member is not able to arrive, they must catch up or they will have to take on a larger section of our work. Any team member who will not attend will contact Gagan via phone, email, or person. Kay will email everyone the meeting minutes after each meeting.
  •   All of our work will be collaborative and be done on Google Docs so we may all look at our colleague’s current work. If a majority of us agree the one members work is not sufficient, they will have to redo their work to meet our expectations.
  •   To prevent Groupthink, we have assigned Sachin as the devil’s advocate so we can produce more robust results.
  • Our team leader responsibility will be to make sure that everybody’s voice is heard (ideas, comments, etc)
  • During our meetings, no texting, emailing, etc will be allowed. Whoever is currently speaking will receive everyone’s undivided attention.
  • If a member is confused on what task they have at hand or have a mental block, they have their entire team available for help. They will not sit there for an hour confused if they can contact anyone else on the team. Whoever they contact must be willing to help.
  • If a team member feels that they have a weakness in the work they have been assigned, they should communicate their concern and they can swap their work with somebody else.
  • If any changes are made to any of our work/documents, every single team member has to approve before changes are made.

Please refer to Conflict Management if there are any disputes or complications about these ground rules.

Conflict Management

We all have the same goal to create a great product and business plan. However, problems sometimes do arise. To prevent any conflicts:

  • We must be open and flexible with other team members and not immediately shoot down what they say.
  • Words such as stupid, dumb, retarded, etc are not acceptable and shall not be heard during our meetings.
  • A majority vote will be made just in case our team doesn’t agree on anything.

If a conflict between individuals arise:

  • They will personally try to resolve their conflict
  • If that does not work, they will contact our team leader and have him mediate their conflict.
  • Last resort, we will have our professor try to mediate the conflict.
